I've played a few rounds of Xiangqi but I'm not good at it. I don't really like how confined the general is. But it's rather fun to play.

Xiangqi is the name of Chinese chess. And the general is Xiangqi's equivalent of chess's king.

The river is nice but I don't like that the elephants can't cross.

No they're generals. Legend has it that they used to be called the emperors, but when the emperor of China heard that two Xiangqi players were trying to capture and kill the emperor, he had them put to death. So they renamed it the general.

Elephants would be a fine piece if they could cross the river. I know there's no river or restrictions for elephants in Janggi (Korean chess), so I'd like to try that sometime.

I can play Xiangqi pretty well. I am Chinese, nonetheless (although I'm relatively better at shogi now)
